This program will introduce folks to live birds of prey, as they meet a few of the Refuge’s resident raptors. Learn the personal history of each native New York animal and why it lives at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge, as well as the adaptations that allow these animals to be such incredible hunters. Come see LIVE Birds of Prey up close and personal! |

| From whip-poor-wills to warblers, to buntings to birds-of-prey, or
sparrows to shorebirds,several dozen bird species use the various forest, field, and wetland
habitats of the Pine Barrens for breeding, to feed in during spring and fall migration, and over the winter months. If you are interested to

This will be a fun introduction to the Rangers job, description of a prescribed fire and its benefits, tools and equipment used to fight forest fires. There will be a demonstration of tools and equipment used on prescribed fires and forest fires. See first hand Engine # 161 spray some water, some fore foam and all the tools needed to keep us safe! The creatures living along our local shores come in many different colors and shapes, and this program give guests the chance to meet some of these diverse characters. Visitors of all ages can learn about the varied coastal environments surrounding Long Island, as well as the animals that have adapted to those specific habitats. Flying Squirrels of Long Island |

Come join us as we discover the mysterious Southern flying squirrel. We'll talk about these rarely seen creatures that glide about the night sky. Although abundant, these small guys are often not seen. We'll go over what they eat, where they live, and how they are only one of two species in North America that can "fly". | Getting to know the Bees and Wasps! | Joe Napolitano, Suffolk Community College | ||||
Often present (but not always welcome) bees and wasps represent one of the largest and most successful groups of insects in the world. Join entomologist Joe Napolitano of Suffolk County Community College for an exciting look at the diversity and biology of our local bees and wasps. We’ll take a field walk to observe live specimens and learn how to identify common bees and wasps by their appearance, nests and behavior. | Carmans River Biodiversity Research | Longwood High School Students | ||||
| Longwood High School students will present their research and
stewardship projects to introduce you to the biodiversity of Carmans River and Warblers Woods County Park in Middle Island/Yaphank. The students will discuss and display living examples of some of the interesting species they have collected and studied this year. In partnership with Suffolk County Department Parks, NYSDEC, the Pine Barrens Commission and Brookhaven National Laboratory, these students have developed an understanding of the history, biodiversity, chemistry and threats to these local environments. These students know the importance of maintaining the health and quality of these precious natural resources and are excited to share with the public what they have learned during the Pine Barrens Discovery day. Come see their presentations and discovery for yourself, what these resources offer the public as well as some of the important yet seldom seen members of our natural community. Age –6 years and up |
